How the numbers work

Five rules decide every figure above. Here is each one in plain words.

  1. Low wages

Wages of $50 or less a month: no CPF is due. Above $50 up to $500: only the employer contributes. Above $500 up to $750: the employee's share phases in. Above $750: full rates apply.

  2. The $8,000 ceiling

Only the first $8,000 of ordinary wages each month attracts CPF.

  3. Age and PR year

The rates depend on the employee's age group, and for permanent residents on how long they have held PR status. Age groups change from the month after the birthday month.

  4. Rounding

The total contribution is rounded to the nearest dollar, the employee's share drops the cents, and the employer pays the difference.

  5. Foreign employees

Foreign employees don't receive CPF contributions. Some may still contribute to a self-help group fund such as MBMF or SINDA.
